We live in a culture obsessed with credentials. We create 10-year career plans and seek out mentors to ensure we don’t fail in the marketplace. If you want to be a professional, you spend years to master the required skills.

But when it comes to the most permanent, God-ordained commitment of our lives—marriage—we often “wing it.” We spend years in courtship having fun and months planning a wedding ceremony but zero or a few days preparing for the covenant that follows. If marriage is meant to be a lifetime partnership, why is our “study time” so lopsided?

Marriage as a Divine Mirror

Our preparation for marriage should reflect God’s purpose, which goes far beyond our personal happiness. Scripturally, marriage is a theological classroom designed to:

  1. Reflect our walk with God: Just as we walk with Christ, we walk with a spouse. “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” (Amos 3:3).
  2. Bring us to the knowledge of God: In the intimacy of marriage, we see a glimpse of how God knows us. “For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face…” (1 Corinthians 13:12).
  3. Reveal God’s unfailing love: Marriage shows a commitment that doesn’t quit. “I have loved thee with an everlasting love.with lovingkindness i have drawn you..” (Jeremiah 31:3).
  4. Show our proper response to Him: Our devotion to a spouse mirrors our duty to God. “We love him, because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19).
  5. Teach us submission: It breaks our pride, teaching us Christ-like strength. “Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God” (Ephesians 5:21).
  6. Model intimacy and fruitfulness: True intimacy leads to fruit—spiritual character and physical legacy—which carries holy responsibility. “Be fruitful, and multiply…” (Genesis 1:28).

The Biblical Tenets: Preparation for the Permanent Covenant

To prepare for marriage is to embrace two non-negotiable biblical tenets:

  • Monogamy (One Flesh): Just as God has one wife—the Church—we are called to total exclusivity. “…and they shall be one flesh” (Genesis 2:24).
  • No Divorce (Unbreakable Commitment): This helps us understand God’s commitment to us. “What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder” (Matthew 19:6).
